Topology of Sustainability - Education
Provide an awareness of sustainable practices to motivate learning. Providing an awareness of sustainable practices is the first step for individuals to understand the implications of their actions and choices.
With an awareness of sustainable practices established, educate peers on the principles of sustainable practices.
Education should focus on two areas- personal and professional sustainable practices. This allows the student to develop awareness and skills about sustainable practices on both a personal and professional level. There is a transferal learning experience between these two levels.
The most powerful education strategy is "student centered group management" where people are responsible for making themselves what they are and their social awareness is created by their freedom to choose among alternatives.
Although learning is often guided by extrinsic rewards, the teacher must assist the student in discovering the intrinsic motivations to higher goals. It is important to create an atmosphere of lowered anxiety for the participants. Always maintain education and learning as the priority of any event. Provide an educational framework for people to understand and feel comfortable. Leave enough flexibility in the education experience to allow individuals to be empowered to choose to make improvements utilizing their own expertise and knowledge. This will allow the individual to be able to leverage their skills to come up with innovative sustainable solutions within their organization.
An additional bonus from this education strategy allows the teacher the ability to learn from the students. The best way to become an expert on a skill is to teach it.
