Topology of Sustainability - Human Adaptive Responses

There are three types of human adaptation processes: environmental, technological and sustainable.

Environmental adaptations are due to the form, structure or functional human biological responses to reduce stress and increase comfort levels by decreasing energy requirements.

Technological adaptations are due to human responses to reduce stress and increase comfort levels by the creative and innovative use of energy, materials, tools, and knowledge.

Sustainable adaptations are a hybrid blend of both environmental and technological adaptations due to human responses to reduce stress and increase comfort levels.

These adaptive responses are intertwined with human and organism interactions.

Humans have a tendency to accept technological adaptations in the same way as they do with environmental adaptations. Environmental adaptations evolve over long periods of time. Technological adaptations occur almost instantly.

There is a growing divergence between human ecology and natural ecology. More natural resources are being extracted to provide additional comfort for individuals. Many times new technologies are developed and natural resources are being extracted to accommodate previous "technological" advances.

One example is the nuclear industry. A whole new industry has been created to deal with the containment and remediation of these toxic substances, in addition to providing a powerful conflict device against any other culture. This industry's business model requires that capital be provided for environmental and economic costs lasting 100,000 years.
